Panama Canal: Ilya Espino de Marotta Takes the Helm as the Waterway Faces Major Challenges

Ilya Espino de Marotta will become the first woman to lead the Panama Canal since the waterway returned to Panamanian control, taking charge as the route faces pressure over water, demand and global competition.

Espino de Marotta assumes the administration of the Panama Canal Authority on Monday, September 7, for the 2026-2033 period. She has spent four decades working at the canal and has held positions across the institution, including engineering, dredging, sustainability, accounting and operations. She also took part in the expansion of the interoceanic waterway.

In 2020, she became the first woman to serve as deputy administrator. Six years later, she is setting another precedent by taking the top job. The Canal’s board announced her appointment in May.

Former administrator Jorge Luis Quijano highlighted the breadth of her experience. “Ilya’s selection, I believe, says a great deal about her history at the Panama Canal,” he said, noting that she had worked in more divisions than he had, including engineering, dredging, expansion, sustainability, accounting and investment planning.

Espino de Marotta has said she intends to continue projects that strengthen the canal’s capacity and respond to changing demands in international maritime trade. “I commit to continuing to do my best for our country, supporting our customers, securing that future and the strategic planning we have so that Panama as a country can continue to grow,” she said. She also thanked current and former canal workers who had worked with her since she began in 1985.

Her tenure will involve ensuring water availability for operations, responding to rising demand, preserving the route’s competitiveness and maintaining the canal’s reliability against alternative transport routes. Changes in global trade will also require adaptation and strategic investment.
