Panama Canal sets record $5.3 million fee for ship passage amid drought

The Panama Canal has seen a record-breaking fee of $5.3 million paid by a South Korean company for priority passage of its liquefied petroleum gas vessel. This unprecedented payment highlights the immense value placed on timely transit through the crucial waterway, especially as it faces significant operational constraints.

The record fee was paid by SK Gas for its vessel, the G. Spirit, to secure passage on September 1. This auction system, where the highest bidder gains priority, is a response to dwindling water levels in the Gatún and Alhajuela artificial lakes. These lakes, vital for the canal's operation, have been depleted due to the adverse effects of the El Niño phenomenon, which typically brings warmer and drier conditions.

In response to the water shortage, the Panama Canal Authority announced that daily transits will be reduced from 36 to 34 starting September 3, with a further decrease to 32 by mid-September. This reduction will impact global shipping, as roughly 5% of the world's maritime commerce relies on this 80-kilometer waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Canal administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta confirmed the $5.3 million as the highest amount ever paid, noting a recent trend of elevated auction bids. While the average auction price between October 2025 and February 2026 was around $55,000, the current market dictates much higher prices for urgent passage. This situation underscores the canal's critical role in international trade and the challenges posed by climate-related events like El Niño.
