Panama, Colombia leaders prioritize power grid, crime fight in first meeting

Panama's President José Raúl Mulino and Colombia's President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella met in Cali, Colombia, to focus on key bilateral issues. A primary concern was advancing the electrical interconnection project between the two countries, driven by Colombia's energy needs. Mulino also highlighted a request from Ecuador regarding electrical exchange, emphasizing its potential to foster development in involved communities.

The leaders also addressed security cooperation, particularly in combating drug trafficking and organized crime. Panama sought assistance from Colombian police and military forces to train and advise its own security agencies. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Colombian security forces in their fight against criminal organizations.

Discussions extended to air connectivity, including potential flights to Montería, Río Hato, and the Marcos A. Gelabert Airport. The upcoming reactivation of the Colombia-Panama Good Neighbor Commission was also on the agenda. The meeting concluded with both leaders attending the presidential inauguration ceremony in Cali.
