Panama court upholds 50-year sentence for homicide and robbery

A man's 50-year prison sentence for a violent crime in Calidonia has been fully confirmed by the Superior Court of Appeals. This decision ratifies the original sentence handed down by a Trial Court, following a hearing where the Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office argued to maintain the conviction.

The case dates back to February 20, 2022. According to the Public Ministry's investigation, the convicted man and accomplices arrived at the Santa Fe building in Calidonia. They allegedly held the victims captive, stole their belongings, and then attacked them with firearms. One of the young victims died from the attack, while another survived.

The prosecution presented evidence during the trial that it argued established the defendant's criminal responsibility as the perpetrator of these crimes. In addition to the 50-year prison term, the court also confirmed a five-year disqualification from holding public office after the sentence is served.

The Public Ministry issued a statement emphasizing that the confirmation of this sentence underscores the efforts of the Homicide and Femicide Section of the Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office. They highlighted their commitment to prosecuting grave offenses through investigations grounded in solid evidence, aimed at combating criminal activity.
