Panama's Ministry of Health has intensified its response in Montijo, Veraguas, following the confirmation of two hantavirus cases. Both infections are linked to a single agricultural farm in the Unión del Norte corregimiento, prompting the ministry to deploy epidemiological teams. The focus is on reinforcing prevention and health surveillance measures within the community. Health officials are conducting meetings with local leaders, educational institutions, and healthcare personnel to educate residents on reducing contagion risks. Specific recommendations include maintaining environmental sanitation in homes, exercising caution during cleaning, and properly storing grains away from residences to deter rodents, the primary carriers of the virus. The epidemiologist for the Ministry of Health, George Edwards, emphasized the importance of community engagement to prevent further cases. He urged producers and residents who store grains, such as rice and corn, to be particularly vigilant as these attract rodents. The director of the Montijo Health Center, Idalina Martínez, confirmed that response protocols are active to manage any suspected cases. She specifically called on residents in Unión del Norte to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms like fever, general malaise, and respiratory difficulties.
