Panama issues heavy rain and thunderstorm warning until July 6

Panama's Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Imhpa) has issued a vigilance notice warning of heavy rains and thunderstorms expected to affect the entire country and its maritime sectors until July 6. The notice, effective from Wednesday afternoon until late Monday night, covers all provinces and regions, as well as the Caribbean and Pacific coastlines.

The atmospheric instability is attributed to a combination of meteorological systems, including low-pressure areas, trough axes, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and the passage of Tropical Wave No. 20, anticipated between Sunday and Monday. Imhpa forecasts that these conditions, coupled with upper-level wind patterns, will lead to significant rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and potential wind gusts in various parts of Panama.

Daily rainfall accumulation is projected to range between 30 and 100 millimeters, with three-day totals potentially reaching between 90 and 300 millimeters, depending on the specific area. The Imhpa has alerted the public to the potential consequences of this heavy rainfall, including landslides, surface runoff, significant increases in river and stream levels, and strong winds associated with the thunderstorms.

In response to the forecast, authorities are urging the population to remain vigilant and follow official reports and recommendations from civil protection and security agencies. Special emphasis is placed on exercising extreme caution in areas prone to flooding and landslides while the vigilance notice remains active. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and adhere to safety guidelines.
