Panama Issues Rain and Thunderstorm Alert Until August 19

Panama is under a nationwide Prevention Alert for heavy rains and thunderstorms, effective until August 19. The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) issued the warning in anticipation of worsening weather conditions across the country.

The alert is prompted by the approach of tropical wave #35, which is currently moving over Colombia and is expected to push significant moisture towards Panama. Meteorologists predict a sharp increase in atmospheric instability in the coming days, raising concerns about potential flooding and severe weather events.

Authorities have identified several areas at higher risk, including Bocas del Toro, the Ngäbe Buglé region, mountainous areas of Chiriquí, Veraguas, Los Santos, Darién, Guna Yala, Emberá Wounaan, and parts of Panama province. Soils in the eastern, central, and western regions are already saturated, with moisture levels exceeding 65%. This condition significantly elevates the probability of landslides and sudden river level rises.

Sinaproc urges the public to exercise extreme caution and follow safety recommendations. These include avoiding crossing rivers or flooded roads, securing homes against strong winds, seeking shelter away from trees during thunderstorms, driving with extra care due to reduced visibility and potential road hazards, and closely monitoring children and the elderly. Citizens are advised to stay informed through official channels and prioritize safety.
