Panama orders seizure of assets linked to drug trafficking ring dismantled in 'Alianza' operation

Panamanian authorities have ordered the seizure of assets, including four vehicles and cash, that were linked to the "Alianza" operation. This extensive investigation successfully dismantled a suspected international drug trafficking network that used shipping containers to transport illicit substances from Panama's Pacific port of Balboa.

The "Alianza" operation, initiated in 2024, targeted a criminal structure allegedly involved in smuggling drugs destined for Europe and Oceania. The investigation tracked 19 separate events and resulted in the seizure of over a ton of drugs, according to the Superior Prosecutor's Office for Drugs. The operation led to the apprehension of 26 individuals.

During a subsequent control hearing, a judge deemed the precautionary measures against the seized assets legal. The case proceeds on charges of conspiracy to commit drug-related offenses and international drug trafficking. The Public Ministry was represented by prosecutor María Sánchez, while the defense included private lawyers and a public defender.

Of the 26 individuals apprehended, 22 were placed in provisional detention after their arrest and charges were formalized. These charges include conspiracy to commit drug offenses, crimes against public safety, international drug trafficking, and money laundering. Additionally, four plea agreements were validated, resulting in prison sentences ranging from 60 to 120 months for similar charges.
