Panama police target 'Mafia Filipina' drug ring after murder probe

Panamanian authorities are dismantling a criminal organization dubbed the "Mafia Filipina," which allegedly operated in the Betania district and beyond. The investigation gained traction following the May 19 murder of a man identified by the alias "John Wick." This homicide, which occurred on Via Ricardo J. Alfaro near El Dorado, prompted a deeper dive into the group's activities.

Despite its name referencing a foreign country, the "Mafia Filipina" reportedly originated in Panama and began its operations in 2021, later expanding to areas like Tuira and Chucunaque. Investigators identified a distinctive mark of the group: an elephant tattoo on the hand of its members. Authorities are currently searching for ten additional individuals allegedly linked to the organization, including Félix Córdoba, Carlos Herrera, and José Landecho.

The group is suspected of using shipping containers to transport drug shipments to international destinations, including Spain, Kosovo, and Egypt. A key vulnerability for the "Mafia Filipina" was its members' online presence. Forensic analysis of photos and videos on platforms like TikTok helped investigators profile suspects, determine their hierarchy, and build a case.

During an operation on Tuesday, July 21, several individuals were apprehended in buildings in the Santa María sector. Local residents reported that while the community was once peaceful, young people between 20 and 27 years old began joining the group about five years ago, causing fear. Following court hearings, eight individuals were placed in provisional detention, one received house arrest, and another must report periodically. The group faces investigation for alleged involvement in national and international drug trafficking, homicide, illegal firearm possession, and gang activity.
