Panama's Civil Protection Monitors Seismic Activity After Weekend Tremors

Panama's National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) is maintaining constant monitoring of seismic activity that occurred across the country over the weekend. The agency is reiterating the importance of public prevention awareness and advising citizens to rely solely on official sources for information regarding seismic events.

According to Yackzabeth Jiménez, the regional director of Sinaproc, seven seismic movements were registered nationwide between August 1 and 2. One of the most significant events, with a magnitude of 4.7, was recorded in Los Santos, relatively close to the province of Veraguas. In response to this activity, Sinaproc is reinforcing its recommendations to the public, particularly in provinces like Veraguas where recent drills have been conducted in schools and public institutions as part of emergency preparedness efforts.

Jiménez emphasized the critical need for the public to know how to act during an earthquake. She advised individuals to move away from power poles, electrical lines, and structures or walls that could collapse if they are in the street during a tremor. Sinaproc also urged citizens to stay informed through official channels, including Sinaproc's own platforms and the Institute of Geosciences at the University of Panama, which also tracks seismic movements in the country. The agency assured that it continues its permanent monitoring in coordination with the Institute of Geosciences to keep the population informed and issue necessary recommendations.
