Panama's Fundación Iguales unveils pride flag, announces OAS forum on human rights

Fundación Iguales, in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC Panamá), held its traditional unveiling of the pride flag in Panama City. The event brought together activists and human rights defenders to discuss legal and social inequalities and challenges confronting the LGBTIQ+ population in Panama.

Organization leaders highlighted that the lack of legal protection for vulnerable groups weakens Panama's democratic structure. They also announced a collaboration with the newspaper La Estrella de Panamá to publish informative content for five Sundays under the slogan "We are all family!" This initiative aims to showcase the realities of diverse families.

During the event, the foundation's leadership also exclusively shared organizational details for an upcoming international forum. This high-level colloquium, titled “Strengthening the Inter-American Human Rights System: Challenges from Multilateralism and the Implementation of its Standards Amid Global Changes,” will take place during the OAS General Assembly in Panama.

The forum, scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, at the Hotel Sheraton, is co-organized with the LGBTTI&TS Coalition of the Americas and the Network of LGBTI+ Litigants of the Americas. It will feature technical panels with participation from commissioners of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH), representatives of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (Corte IDH), and OAS authorities. Discussions will cover civil marriage standards for same-sex couples and the challenges to democratic stability in the face of global economic and environmental shifts.
