Panama's New Aquilino Tejeira Hospital to Open July 22, 2027, After Years of Delays

The new Aquilino Tejeira Hospital in Panama's Coclé province is set to open its doors on July 22, 2027, Health Minister Fernando Boyd Galindo announced, finally setting a date for one of the nation's most anticipated healthcare projects. This inauguration date marks the culmination of a project that has endured over eight years since the initial order to proceed was issued in January 2019.

The hospital's prolonged construction period has been marked by numerous delays, leaving it incomplete when the current administration, led by President José Raúl Mulino, took office. The government has since prioritized reactivating and closely monitoring such infrastructure projects to ensure their completion.

Minister Boyd Galindo stated that the new facility will significantly bolster specialized medical services in Coclé. It is expected to expand the capacity of the national health system and provide crucial care to an estimated 180,000 residents in the province and surrounding areas. The hospital will feature 256 beds, outpatient services, a clinical laboratory, 24-hour emergency care, and specialized units including pulmonology, surgery, hemodialysis, and pediatrics.
