When a cat weaves between your legs and rubs its head or body against you, it may be doing more than showing affection. The behavior also helps the animal communicate through smell.

Veterinarian Pancho Cavero, founder of the PetExperts clinic, explained in a video posted on TikTok that cats use physical contact to leave their scent on people, other animals and objects in their surroundings. “It is not accidental, it is their way of communicating with you,” he said.

Cats have scent glands in several parts of the body, especially around the cheeks, chin, forehead and lips. By rubbing against a person, they deposit secretions containing chemical signals and mark something that belongs to their familiar environment. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association says head and body rubbing helps cats spread their scent and create an environment they recognize. This explains why cats also rub against furniture, walls, doors and other household objects.

The same action can carry several meanings. Cavero says a cat may rub against someone to show affection or attract attention. Depending on the context, it may want petting, play, food or simple contact with a familiar person. When someone returns home after several hours, a cat may raise its tail and repeatedly circle their legs, combining a greeting with interaction and the recovery of a familiar smell. “Each rub is a special way of telling you that you are important,” Cavero said.
