Pandeglang residents feel Anak Krakatau eruption tremors from 1 a.m.

The doors of Fauzan’s house in Labuan, Pandeglang, shook continuously from about 1 a.m. as Anak Krakatau erupted in the Sunda Strait. By morning, the tremors had grown strong enough to reach the back of the house.

Fauzan said the shaking initially affected the front of the home. At around 4 a.m., the back room remained still, but the front continued to rattle. The tremors were still being felt during dawn prayers, and by 6 or 6:30 a.m. they had spread through the house.

Concerned by the growing intensity, Fauzan and his family packed essential belongings and left for Serang, which they considered safer. He said they departed Labuan at 7:30 a.m. and could still feel the shaking at 8 a.m.

The roads around the area appeared quieter than usual, and several other Labuan residents reportedly began evacuating temporarily. Fauzan said his neighborhood lies on higher ground and away from the shoreline, but he remained worried about people near Carita beach, closer to Anak Krakatau. “If it is already shaking this much here, imagine what it is like over there,” he said.
