Papua New Guinea parliament to consider Bougainville's independence bid

Papua New Guinea's parliament is preparing to consider the outcome of a non-binding referendum, marking a significant step toward the potential independence of the autonomous region of Bougainville. In the 2019 vote, residents of Bougainville, an archipelago with approximately 370,000 people, overwhelmingly supported secession, with 97.7% voting in favor.

This parliamentary consideration follows years of intricate negotiations between the national government and Bougainville's regional leadership.
