Paranormal Cirque Nightmare Brings Horror and Cabaret to Kingston

A familiar big top has landed outside Kingston's Cataraqui Centre, but the experience within is far from traditional family entertainment. Paranormal Cirque Nightmare has begun its run, merging the spectacle of circus acrobatics with the thrills of theatrical horror, dark comedy, and engaging, mature audience interaction.

The atmosphere is set even before guests find their seats, with costumed characters roaming the entrance and transforming the parking lot into a sinister, immersive environment. Momi, an original ensemble member since the show's 2014 Italian debut, described it as a mix of theater, cabaret, and horror.

Created by performers seeking a darker alternative to conventional circuses, Paranormal Cirque features aerialists and acrobats sharing the stage with figures like zombies and demons, often covered in fake blood. Actor Garpej Wrete, who has toured with the production for four years, explained his current costume draws inspiration from burlesque and grotesque imagery.

Wrete characterized the show's blend of sensuality and horror not as a balance, but as a deliberate 60 percent sensuality to 40 percent horror ratio. While the production follows a script, performers adapt their interactions based on audience reactions, creating a dynamic and unpredictable experience. The production is restricted to guests aged 13 and older, with those under 17 requiring adult accompaniment. Organizers warn of adult language and mature themes. The strong advance ticket sales have already prompted an extension of the Kingston engagement, with organizers believing one week will not be enough for the city.
