Parents denounce flooding at La Chorrera school

Parents at the El Progreso Basic Educational Center in La Chorrera have voiced strong complaints about persistent flooding that plagues the school during heavy rainfall. This recurring issue, which has persisted for several years, sees water inundating classrooms through windows and doors, soaking essential furniture like chairs and tables.

During a recent downpour, students had to navigate through puddles to leave the school. One parent expressed deep concern for her child, a first-grader who was frightened by the flooding. "My baby, personally, this is his first year, and he told me he was scared, that the classroom flooded, and it's worrying because these are prekindergarten and kindergarten children," she recounted.

The school serves approximately 200 preschool-aged children across two shifts. Following the latest incident, many parents opted to keep their children home for the afternoon session due to the adverse weather conditions and the fear of a repeat occurrence.

Parents are appealing directly to the Ministry of Education for an urgent intervention to improve the school's infrastructure. They also highlighted the need for inspectors and maintenance staff at the facility. The school's deputy director acknowledged the intensity of the recent storm and strong winds contributed to the flooding. While stating that measures are being taken to upgrade the facilities, she admitted that internal issues have caused delays in the renovation process.
