Part of Bishkek Park Will Be Dug Up a Year After Renovation

A section of Bishkek’s Chingiz Aitmatov Square is set to be dug up only a year after a major renovation, with machinery already brought in and workers preparing to drill an artesian well.

Workers told 24.kg they had been ordered to drill because there is not enough water to irrigate the park’s greenery. The affected area has been fenced off. Once drilling ends, pipes and pumping equipment will apparently be installed.

The work could reach considerable depths. Artesian wells typically range from 30 to 250 meters, according to the report. Trees may also be cut down again to clear the site, although the article presents that possibility as uncertain.

The square was reconstructed in 2025. Authorities removed jasmine, lilac, viburnum and acacia bushes, brought in new soil and reseeded the lawns. It took a year for the renovated area to recover and become attractive to residents. Now part of the recreation area is expected to be disrupted once more.

The report also notes that the Government Fountain in the square was restored earlier this summer, a reconstruction that prompted many questions from Bishkek residents. The city administration had not issued an official comment on the planned well installation at the time of publication.
