Pashinyan: Armenia Is Moving Toward Interstate Relations With Turkey and Azerbaijan

Armenia is presenting a more interconnected regional policy, with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan saying Yerevan is moving toward interstate relations with both Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Speaking at an expanded leaders’ meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Bishkek, Pashinyan described the approach as a multipolar foreign policy designed to protect Armenia’s sovereignty and independence. He said a small country could contribute to a multipolar world by balancing relations among major geopolitical centers.

We are moving toward establishing interstate relations with our other two neighbors, Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Pashinyan said Armenia was deepening friendly ties with Iran and Georgia while working to establish state-level communication with its other two neighbors, Azerbaijan and Turkey. He said that effort had become more concrete after the peace established between Armenia and Azerbaijan on Aug. 8 last year, with the support and participation of U.S. President Donald Trump.

This project will create new transport opportunities not only from east to west, from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean, but also from south to north, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Black Sea.

The effort includes implementing the TRIPP project, whose practical work is expected to begin in the coming months. Pashinyan said the project would create transport links from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean and from the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea, giving countries across the region new routes and potential benefits.

He also listed Armenia’s strategic relations with Georgia, China, Kazakhstan, the United States, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania and the European Union. Pashinyan said Armenia’s ties with India and Iran were already strategic in practice, while work continued to formalize them through official documents.
