Pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon Questioned Over Claim That President Lee Took High-School Equivalency Exam in Juvenile Detention

Police in Seoul questioned Sarang Jeil Church pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon over remarks about President Lee Jae-myung that led to a criminal complaint.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s public crimes investigation unit summoned Jeon as a suspect on charges of defamation through false statements, according to police. The questioning concerned remarks he made during a May 10 church service in Seoul.

I meant to say that he took the equivalency exam as a juvenile, but I mistakenly used the word juvenile detention center.

Jeon allegedly said Lee had not completed middle or high school and had taken a high-school equivalency exam while in juvenile detention before transferring to Chung-Ang University. He also made remarks to the effect that the country would collapse because of Lee. The speech was livestreamed from a Sunday service held near Donghwa Duty Free in Jongno.

The Peace Namu Christian Recovery Center, a Protestant civic group, filed a complaint on May 11, saying the statements were false. Jeon’s side later issued a statement saying he had meant to say that Lee took the exam as a juvenile, but mistakenly used the term “juvenile detention center.”
