Pay Extra for Overhead Bin Use: Passengers React to Jetstar's New Fee

Australian airline Jetstar announced on December 5th that it will begin charging passengers for using overhead baggage compartments, a move set to take effect in February. The airline is introducing a 'priority boarding' fee, which will allow passengers to place carry-on luggage in the overhead bins.

Under the new policy, passengers who purchase the basic fare will be restricted to bringing only one small bag that must fit under the seat in front of them. This includes items like backpacks, handbags, and laptop bags. To bring a larger carry-on suitcase into the cabin and store it in the overhead compartments, passengers will need to opt for a fare that includes priority boarding.

The cost of this additional baggage service will vary depending on the flight distance. For example, a Sydney to Melbourne route could start at 33 Australian dollars (approximately $33), while a Cairns to Tokyo flight might begin at 52 Australian dollars (approximately $52).

The Guardian pointed out that Jetstar has not stated whether ticket prices will be reduced to compensate for the reduced services. This means passengers may end up paying a similar price for flights while receiving fewer included amenities. Critics suggest this strategy allows airlines to increase ancillary revenue by charging for services previously offered as standard.
