Pemex preparing report on 'huachigas' surge, Sheinbaum says

President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that officials at Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Mexico's state-owned oil company, are compiling a comprehensive report on the issue of "huachigas" – the illicit theft of liquefied petroleum gas. This phenomenon has seen a dramatic surge, with data from Pemex indicating a staggering 377% increase in "huachigas" over the last six years.

"They are finishing a part that has to do with the adaptation of the database, so that all the arguments are given about what happened, how it happened, and what is being done," Sheinbaum explained regarding the report's status. The document aims to provide a thorough account of the causes, methods, and current measures being taken to address the escalating problem of gas theft.

To ensure transparency and public awareness, President Sheinbaum stated her intention to formally request that Juan Carlos Carpio Fragoso, the director of Pemex, or another high-ranking official from the company, present the detailed findings of this report. This presentation is expected to take place during a press conference, allowing for direct public inquiry and a clear dissemination of information regarding the scale and nature of "huachigas."

The issue of "huachigas" represents a significant challenge for Pemex and the Mexican government, impacting revenue, infrastructure security, and potentially public safety.
