People Power Party Ethics Committee Initiates Disciplinary Action Against Lawmakers for Remarks on Assault Victim

The People Power Party's ethics committee has launched disciplinary proceedings against lawmakers Seo Bum-soo and Jin Jong-oh. The action follows their inappropriate comments made during a meeting concerning victims of violent crime. The remarks were reportedly made before a meeting discussing the "Busan kick-boxing assault case" victim. Seo allegedly said to Jin, "Let's do a kick-boxing move?" Jin reportedly replied, "I'm better with my hands than my feet." The meeting was attended by the victim of the assault case. Following criticism, Seo apologized on Facebook, stating that the pain of crime victims should never be taken lightly and offered to apologize in person if the victim allowed. Jin also apologized, acknowledging that the victim's suffering should not be trivialized or ridiculed. However, the victim rejected any apology, stating, "I don't need to see you or receive an apology. What's important now is that crime victims are living in hell and the public is living in hell. Please focus on that issue." The ethics committee also sent inquiries for fact-finding regarding disciplinary proceedings initiated against lawmakers Cho Kyeong-tae, Kwon Young-jin, and Jin Jong-oh on July 27. Cho was accused of demanding the defeat of National Assembly Vice Speaker Park Deok-hum after disagreeing with the results of an internal party election for deputy speaker. Kwon was accused of grabbing floor leader Chung Jin-sik by the collar in protest of his assignment to a standing committee in the second half of the 22nd National Assembly. Jin was reported to the ethics committee for supporting independent candidate Han Dong-hoon in the June 3 by-election for Busan Buk-gap. Meanwhile, Vice Chairman Woo Jong-hwan and ethics committee member Hwang Kyung-sung announced their resignations during the committee meeting, demanding the resignation of Chairman Yoon Min-woo. They stated that the internal conflict within the ethics committee, ongoing for a month, is a burden and a source of conflict for the party. They urged Chairman Yoon to make an honorable choice before further allegations tarnish his legacy.
