People Power Party expels former Cheongju councilor over 'minor solicitation' charges

A former councilor in Cheongju, identified as Choi, has been expelled from the ruling People Power Party amidst serious allegations including soliciting a minor and illegally filming child sexual abuse material. The party's North Chungcheong Provincial Chapter announced the decision on July 20, following a unanimous vote by its ethics committee.

The expulsion followed an intensive police investigation that began on July 15, involving raids on Choi's office. Facing mounting pressure, Choi submitted his resignation to the Cheongju City Council on July 16, which was immediately accepted. The scandal has also led to the resignation of Kim Jin-mo, the People Power Party's district chairman for Cheongju West, raising questions about accountability in the party's nomination process.

Choi is accused of engaging in sexual relations with a minor on three occasions between October 2024 and October of the previous year in Sejong. He is also under investigation for allegedly filming child sexual abuse material. Reports suggest Choi may have been aware of the police investigation during the election campaign period last May but proceeded to run for office, deceiving the party and voters. He was elected to the Cheongju City Council after receiving the party's nomination for the Cheongju West district.

In response to the allegations, Choi stated to the media, "I am innocent. I will explain later." The party's decision to expel him reflects the gravity of the charges and the public outcry surrounding the case.
