People Power Party Refuses to Cede Judiciary Committee Chairmanship in Assembly Negotiations

South Korea's People Power Party has firmly stated it will not yield the chairmanship of the powerful Legislation and Judiciary Committee to the Democratic Party, escalating political tensions as negotiations continue over the National Assembly's standing committee leadership.

Choi Eun-seok, the People Power Party's deputy floor leader, confirmed the party's position after a general assembly meeting on June 29. "After listening to the opinions of our lawmakers during the general assembly, the overwhelming majority expressed that we absolutely cannot give up the Legislation and Judiciary Committee," Choi told reporters.

This firm stance by the People Power Party presents a significant hurdle in the ongoing negotiations for the chairmanships of the 18 standing committees. The Democratic Party, holding a majority in the Assembly, has been seeking control of key committees, including the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, which holds significant influence over legislative processes.
