People Power Party's Kwon Young-jin reported to police for assault

Rep. Kwon Young-jin of the People Power Party is facing police investigation following allegations of physically assaulting floor leader Chung Jin-suk. The complaint was filed by the civic group People's Livelihood Improvement Committee, which accused Kwon of abuse of power, coercion, and assault.

The incident reportedly occurred on July 23rd when Kwon confronted Chung in his office to protest his committee assignment. Kwon was reportedly displeased with being assigned to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee instead of the Information Committee. During the confrontation, Kwon allegedly grabbed Chung by the collar and engaged in a physical altercation.

Following the incident, Kwon issued an apology in a Telegram group chat for his "unintentional and wrong actions" that caused "great disrespect" to Chung and "damaged leadership." He subsequently announced his withdrawal from the nominated position of Daegu Party Chairman and relinquished his role as the committee's convenor.

The People Power Party's Central Ethics Committee has received a request for disciplinary action against Kwon. The party's supreme council is scheduled to discuss the matter further. Meanwhile, Chung Jin-suk stated that he would put aside personal grievances and focus on his duties as floor leader for the sake of the public's well-being and the nation's normalization.
