People's Writer of Kyrgyzstan, Kalqanbay Ashimbayev, Dies at 86

Kyrgyzstan is mourning the loss of Kalqanbay Ashimbayev, a distinguished figure in the nation's literary and journalistic circles. Ashimbayev, who held the prestigious title of People's Writer of Kyrgyzstan, passed away on August 24, 2026.

His passing was announced by the Writers' Union of Kyrgyzstan. Ashimbayev was recognized for his substantial contributions to the development of Kyrgyz literature and journalism. Throughout his career, he was an active member of the USSR Union of Journalists and the USSR Writers' Union, dedicating many years to writing prose, publicist works, and feuilletons.

Ashimbayev's legacy is marked by numerous accolades, including the titles of People's Writer of Kyrgyzstan, Honored Worker of Culture of the Kyrgyz Republic, and Excellent Student of Public Education. These honors reflect his profound impact on the cultural and educational landscape of the country.

The farewell ceremony for the late writer is scheduled for August 25, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the T. Abdumomunov Kyrgyz National Academic Drama Theater in Bishkek. Following the ceremony, Ashimbayev will be laid to rest at the Ala-Archa cemetery.
