Peravia placed under yellow alert as heavy rains hit the Dominican Republic

Peravia joined Greater Santo Domingo, Monte Plata and San Cristóbal under yellow alert as remnants of an active tropical wave brought heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible wind gusts across the Dominican Republic.

The Emergency Operations Center, known as COE, placed 16 additional provinces under green alert. The affected areas include El Seibo, Hato Mayor, La Altagracia, La Romana, María Trinidad Sánchez, Dajabón, Montecristi, Samaná, San José de Ocoa, San Pedro de Macorís, Sánchez Ramírez, Espaillat, Puerto Plata, Santiago Rodríguez, Valverde and Azua.

The Dominican Institute of Meteorology forecast rainfall totals of 50 to 100 millimeters, with higher amounts possible in isolated locations. The rain could produce flooding in low-lying urban areas and on roads.

Heavy showers had already flooded parts of Santo Domingo, including John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Dr. Fernando Alberto Defilló, Anacaona, Núñez de Cáceres and Luperón avenues. The COE urged residents to secure loose outdoor objects, avoid crossing rivers or flooded streets, and identify evacuation routes and safe areas. It also advised families to review emergency plans, avoid trees and unstable structures, prepare a 72-hour emergency bag and follow local authorities’ instructions.
