Peru celebrates Fiestas Patrias with traditional sweets and bread fair

Lima's Miraflores district will host the Feria de Postres y Panes Patrios (Patriotic Sweets and Breads Fair) from July 26 to 29, celebrating Peru's Fiestas Patrias with a focus on traditional gastronomy. The event, organized by the association Dulce Perú, will take place at Pasaje Porta, opposite Parque Kennedy.

Twenty-six exhibitors from across Peru's coast, highlands, and jungle regions will present a wide array of artisanal sweets and breads. The fair aims to highlight and preserve recipes integral to Peru's culinary history. Among the featured items is ranfañote, considered one of the country's oldest desserts, traditionally made with bread, chancaca (unrefined cane sugar), cheese, and nuts. Historical accounts suggest this sweet was sold by street vendors during the Independence era.

Visitors can expect to sample other classic desserts such as convent-style rice pudding, mazamorra morada, arroz zambito, sango, bola de oro, guargüeros, frejol colado, budín de Chancay, and the renowned turrón de Doña Pepa. These offerings represent flavors that have been passed down through generations and form a significant part of Peru's culinary heritage.

In addition to traditional desserts, the fair will showcase regional breads like Tanta Wawa, Chapla bread from Ayacucho, and Chuta bread, alongside varieties made with kiwicha (amaranth) and seven seeds. The gastronomic experience will be complemented by artisanal chocolate and specialty coffees from Cusco and Cajamarca. Live criolla music, including marineras and valsas, will provide an auditory backdrop, further immersing attendees in Peruvian culture during the national holiday celebrations.
