Peru's Santa Rosa de Lima festival: Hours for sanctuary, wishing well, and masses announced

Thousands of devotees are set to gather at the Sanctuary of Santa Rosa de Lima in Lima on Sunday, August 30, to celebrate the patron saint of Peru. Authorities anticipate an attendance of at least 50,000 people, prompting the establishment of specific hours, pedestrian routes, and enhanced security measures to manage the influx.

The Pozo de los Deseos (Wishing Well) will be accessible to visitors from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. To streamline the process, the Municipality of Lima will distribute over 2,000 pre-printed letters and pens to individuals waiting in line, allowing them to write their petitions before reaching the well.

Masses will commence at 5:00 a.m. and continue hourly until 10:00 p.m. In addition to religious services, a fair featuring traditional Peruvian desserts will be held in the park opposite the temple on both Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30, operating from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Access to the sanctuary will be managed through distinct circuits. Those visiting the Wishing Well will enter through a temporary gate on the first block of Avenida Tacna, with queues potentially extending to Plaza Unión. Exit will be mandatory via Calle Conde de Superunda. The circuit for masses will differ, with queues forming from Rímac towards Avenida Tacna, and attendees exiting along the same avenue. These circuits will not connect within the sanctuary, requiring individuals wishing to participate in both activities to join the respective queues.

Authorities advise attendees to avoid bringing vehicles due to road closures and the pedestrian-focused perimeter around the sanctuary. A traditional Peruvian dessert fair will also be held in the park opposite the temple.
