Peruvian Candidate Sánchez Protests, Demands Vote Count Transparency

Peruvian leftist presidential candidate Roberto Sánchez led thousands of his supporters in a protest Friday in Lima, demanding transparency in the final stages of the vote count. Sánchez is narrowly trailing right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori in the closely contested presidential election, held on June 7.

Marching from his party's headquarters, Sánchez and his adherents proceeded peacefully through several streets in the historic center of the capital. The demonstration, closely monitored by police, concluded without significant incidents. Sánchez addressed his supporters from a balcony at his party's local office, thanking them for their backing and announcing plans to file legal challenges.

"This process must have transparency, zero controversies, legal certainty, because all Peruvian votes are worth the same," Sánchez declared. He emphasized the right to peaceful protest and indicated that further demonstrations would be organized in the coming days to "defend the popular vote."

The protest highlights the tense political climate in Peru as the nation awaits the final results of a highly polarized election. Both candidates have expressed concerns about the integrity of the process at various points, underscoring the deep divisions within the country.
