Peruvian Girl, 10, Rescued in Ecuador Amid Human Trafficking Probe

A 10-year-old Peruvian girl has been rescued and placed under the protection of authorities in Ecuador, following a binational investigation into alleged human trafficking for forced marriage. The operation took place in the indigenous community of Espejo, located in the remote Río Tigre area of the Pastaza province.

The rescue was part of a joint effort between Ecuadorian security forces and Peruvian authorities, including the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Peruvian Armed Forces. The investigation focuses on the movement of minors between indigenous communities in Ecuador and Peru, with evidence suggesting a possible exchange of two children approximately one month before the operation.

During the operation, a 50-year-old man, identified as Santi Cuji Washington Favio, was arrested and handed over to the competent authorities. Ecuador's Interior Minister, John Reimberg, indicated that the girl was being investigated as a potential victim of trafficking and that there were also indications of alleged sexual abuse.

However, the case has faced complications. The arrested man was later released by Ecuadorian authorities after a hearing on charges of alleged sexual abuse. This decision has drawn scrutiny, prompting the Attorney General's Office of Ecuador to initiate a legal review of the prosecutor's actions in the case. Despite this, the young girl remains under the care of Ecuadorian authorities, receiving comprehensive medical, psychological, and integral assistance.
