Peter Magyar attends first NATO summit in Ankara; Hungarian PM to holiday in Antalya with sons

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has arrived in Turkey to participate in his first NATO summit in Ankara. Following the summit, Magyar plans to spend four days on vacation in Antalya with his two sons.

The former government led by Viktor Orbán had already begun preparations for participation in the NATO summit and had booked luxury hotels, but the new Executive canceled these reservations and chose more economical accommodation options.

Magyar, accompanied by Foreign Minister Anita Orbán and Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, highlighted his government's cost-saving measures. He noted that the previous government had booked luxury hotels for the summit, but his administration canceled these reservations in favor of more economical options. The delegation also opted for a Wizz Air flight to Istanbul instead of using a Hungarian Armed Forces plane, traveling to Ankara by car.

Magyar stated he would personally cover all expenses for his sons' travel and stay in Turkey. He explained that this vacation in Antalya was a unique opportunity, likely the only one they would have during the summer due to his intensive work schedule. He is expected to return to Hungary on Sunday evening.

The NATO summit in Ankara carries significant political weight, particularly with U.S. President Donald Trump scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines. Discussions at the summit are expected to focus on defense spending and the transformation of funds into military capabilities, especially amid European concerns about Russia's threat. Trump has previously criticized NATO members for insufficient defense investments.
