Péter Magyar's TISZA party has put forward András Baka, the former president of Hungary's Supreme Court, as its candidate for the country's next president. The announcement was made on Saturday, August 8, by Magyar himself.

The TISZA faction took one of the most important decisions so far a short while ago, by secret ballot: we propose Dr. András Baka, former president of the Supreme Court, for the position of president of Hungary.

Baka previously served as director-general of the College of Public Administration from 1990 to 1998. He was a judge at the European Court of Human Rights from 1991 to 2008 before being elected president of the Supreme Court in 2009.

Magyar noted that Baka was "illegally and prematurely removed from office" by the Fidesz majority in Parliament in 2011, after which he continued his work as a Supreme Court judge. According to Magyar, Baka has consistently emphasized the principle of separation of powers and has been a staunch advocate for the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. The party believes Baka's extensive experience and proven professional independence are invaluable assets as Hungary prepares to lay the groundwork for a new constitutional order. Magyar explained that TISZA had reviewed ten candidates proposed by citizens before the party leadership selected three. The secret ballot within the faction ultimately chose András Baka. The Hungarian Parliament is scheduled to vote on the presidential candidate on August 11. The faction agreed that Baka offers the strongest guarantee that the institution of the president will regain its dignity and capacity to unite the nation, serving as a counterbalance to the ruling majority. They expressed pride that, for the first time since the regime change, the head of state's election was not based on party deals but on the proposal of a truly independent and impartial individual whose authority has been demonstrated through his professional career.
