PGA Tour's Mullinax suspended 6 months for doping violation

Trey Mullinax, a player on the U.S. Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour, has been suspended for six months due to a violation of anti-doping regulations. The suspension stems from a positive test for a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Mullinax acknowledged his responsibility for not knowing the rules but asserted that his intention was not to enhance his athletic performance. He stated in a release that he used an unapproved medication to treat a condition diagnosed during his college years. "It is no excuse that I did not know the rules. It was my responsibility to know the rules before taking medication, but I failed to do so," Mullinax said, admitting his mistake. He added, "To be clear, I have never taken medication for the purpose of enhancing my performance. Anyone who knows me knows how much I respect golf."

The PGA Tour has not disclosed specific details regarding the positive drug test. Mullinax turned professional in 2014 and has been competing for 12 years, with his sole victory on the tour being the Barbasol Championship in 2022. The suspension means he will be eligible to return on January 16 of next year. Mullinax's case is the ninth doping-related suspension on the PGA Tour, following Ahn Byung-hun's suspension in October 2023 for taking a cough medicine containing a prohibited ingredient.
