Philippine president to back successor in 2028 but undecided on choice

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has confirmed he will endorse a candidate for the 2028 presidential election, marking the first time he has publicly stated his intention to back a successor. However, he stressed that choosing a candidate now would be premature, emphasizing the need to observe how political dynamics evolve.

"The time will come. We will certainly provide the best candidate (for) the betterment of lives of the people. We will choose the best possible candidate," Marcos told foreign journalists. This announcement comes amid heightened political maneuvering, particularly concerning Vice President Sara Duterte, who has declared her intention to run for president in 2028.

Duterte, who was formerly an ally of Marcos, is facing significant political challenges. Her alliance with Marcos collapsed early in their term, leading to scrutiny of her finances.
