Philippines Becomes Taiwan's 6th Largest Source of International Students; Science Ministry Leads Delegation to Taiwan

Taiwan is strengthening its educational ties with the Philippines, welcoming a delegation led by the Philippine Department of Science and Technology's Undersecretary Maridon O. Sahagun. The group, comprising leaders from Philippine Science High Schools and elite high schools, is in Taiwan to share expertise in STEM and bilingual education.

In recent years, Taiwan-Philippines educational exchanges have continued to grow. By the 114th academic year, the number of Filipino students studying in Taiwan will reach 5,536, with 3,590 degree-seeking students. The Philippines has already become Taiwan's sixth-largest source of international degree-seeking students.

Philippine students are increasingly choosing Taiwan for higher education, making the Philippines Taiwan's sixth-largest source of international students with 5,536 enrolled for the 2025 academic year. Many pursue degrees in fields like engineering, manufacturing, and medicine, aligning with the Philippines' development goals.

Taiwan's Ministry of Education is actively encouraging this exchange, offering 24 Taiwan Scholarships this year. The ministry has also established a Taiwan Education Center in the Philippines, managed by National Sun Yat-sen University, which has already conducted 193 Mandarin classes since 2018, serving as a vital platform for bilateral educational cooperation.

The Ministry of Education continues to encourage outstanding Filipino students to study in Taiwan and is offering 24 Taiwan Scholarship slots this year.

The delegation's itinerary includes visits to prominent Taiwanese institutions such as Taipei Municipal Zhongzheng High School, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Academia Sinica, and the National Palace Museum. They will also participate in the "2026 Taiwan-Philippines High School Exchange Roundtable" at National Sun Yat-sen University and observe an international student innovation competition,
