Philippines deploys over 10,000 troops for Bangsamoro regional elections

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has mobilized over 10,000 military personnel to ensure security for the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The deployment is a key component of the comprehensive security plan for the region's first-ever parliamentary polls, scheduled for September 14.

This significant military presence was confirmed during a Regional Security Conference held in Maguindanao del Norte. The meeting brought together top officials from the AFP, the Commission on Elections (Comelec), and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to finalize preparations. Army Chief Lt. Gen. Donald Gumiran presented the detailed security measures, which include augmented units from various battalions and special teams.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially authorized the deputation of the AFP, PNP, and other relevant government agencies for election duties through Memorandum Order No. 48. The election period, which began on July 16, includes a nationwide gun ban and the establishment of checkpoints, both of which will remain in effect until September 29.

AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Antonio Nafarrete reaffirmed the military's commitment to supporting a peaceful and orderly electoral process. "To our Comelec and all our partners, you have the full support of the Armed Forces of the Philippines," Nafarrete stated, emphasizing the army's dedication to the historic parliamentary elections in BARMM.
