Photographer Heinz Cibulka Dies at 83

Austrian photo artist Heinz Cibulka, celebrated for his documentation of the Vienna Actionists and his distinctive "picture poems," has died at the age of 83. Cibulka passed away last Friday at his home in Ladendorf, located in the Lower Austrian wine region, with his family by his side.

Cibulka maintained close connections with the Vienna Actionists, a performance art group prominent in the 1960s and 70s. His artistic career, which began gaining significant recognition from the 1970s, saw his work presented in numerous exhibitions. The announcement of his death was made by Fotohof Salzburg, citing Cibulka's wife, Magdalena Frey.

Throughout his career, Cibulka's photography captured the essence of the Vienna Actionists' provocative and often controversial performances. His "picture poems" combined photographic images with text, creating a unique visual language that explored various themes. His contributions to the art world have left a lasting impact, particularly within the Austrian contemporary art scene.
