Photos: Minister’s 28-Year-Old Son Sworn In as Ebonyi Local Government Chairman

Osborn Umahi, a 28-year-old engineer and businessman, has formally taken charge of Ohaozara Local Government Area in Ebonyi State.

Ebonyi Governor Francis Nwifuru administered the oath of office on Tuesday after Umahi won the August 22, 2026, local government election as an All Progressives Congress candidate. The ceremony drew political leaders, government officials and his father, Works Minister and former Ebonyi Governor David Umahi.

During the campaign, Osborn Umahi promised to prioritise infrastructure development, youth empowerment, support for businesses and improved basic services. He also pledged to forgo his salary and allowances throughout his tenure, saying he wanted to serve rather than gain financially from the office.

The election formed part of an APC sweep in Ebonyi, where the party secured all 13 local government chairmanship positions. Umahi studied civil engineering at the University of Surrey in England and later earned a master’s degree in finance and investment management from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He now begins his tenure with his promises of grassroots development and better public services expected to shape his administration.
