Piantedosi to Remain Interior Minister; Salvini Eyed for Transport

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has clarified his position, stating he will remain at the helm of the Interior Ministry. He indicated that Matteo Salvini, the leader of the League party, might be headed for the Transport Ministry in the upcoming year. Piantedosi, who has maintained his composure amid speculation about his potential replacement by Salvini, made these remarks during an appearance on the television program "L'aria che tira."

Piantedosi, who previously served as chief of staff under Salvini, emphasized his role as a civil servant. "I was called, and I said, 'I obey.' As long as they tell me to stay, I will obey," he stated. He also expressed willingness to work with Salvini should he return to the Interior Ministry, highlighting the positive potential of Salvini's leadership.

Turning to the case of Mario Roggero, a jeweler convicted of killing and injuring his assailants, Piantedosi deemed a presidential pardon "inopportune." He explained that the judicial reconstruction of events, under current laws, was correct. "This is not the way for the President of the Republic to evaluate cases like this," he said, referring to calls for a pardon.

However, Piantedosi acknowledged a public demand for greater protection against certain crimes. He cautioned against drastic changes to self-defense laws, warning against a "Wild West" scenario. "It doesn't mean we necessarily have to change the law on self-defense," he stated. He suggested that work could be done on victim compensation and considering the emotional state of victims, noting that some judicial interpretations might have gone against public sentiment.
