Pichai Defends Google's AI Strategy Amidst Competition Concerns

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai forcefully pushed back against claims that Google is losing ground in the artificial intelligence race during the company's recent earnings call. Investors have expressed growing unease over Google's delayed release of its flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro model, a product anticipated to strengthen its position in AI coding and autonomous agent tasks, highly competitive sectors of the industry.

He noted that this model powers a wide array of applications, including cybersecurity, customer service agents, and data analytics. Pichai highlighted the recent release of Gemini 3.6 Flash, which showed significant improvements in coding benchmarks while using fewer tokens compared to its predecessor. Google also unveiled Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and a cybersecurity-focused Flash Cyber model this week.

Pichai assured investors that Google remains "very committed and very confident" about staying at the leading edge of AI. He revealed that the roadmap for Gemini 4 includes rolling out models "almost at a monthly cadence" and that the company is training a significantly larger model designed to compete at the frontier. This vigorous defense underscores Google's challenge: convincing investors to evaluate its AI ambitions not just by the delay of a single model, but by the breadth of its AI ecosystem, which includes cloud infrastructure, custom AI chips, and the integration of Gemini models across its products and services. Despite Wall Street's focus on AI leadership, Google reported another quarter of robust cloud growth, up 82 percent.
