Pickups Defy Market Slump in Argentina; Hilux Leads as New Models Expand Competition

Pickup trucks are maintaining a central role in the Argentine automotive market, demonstrating resilience even amidst a general downturn in vehicle registrations. In July, total vehicle registrations fell 7.7% from June and 30.3% year-on-year, with passenger cars and light commercial vehicles down 31.2% compared to July 2025. However, medium-sized pickups showed greater resistance to the market contraction.

Six key pickup models, Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok, Chevrolet S10, Fiat Titano, and Ram Dakota, collectively registered 6,803 units in July. This figure represents at least 16.6% of all light passenger and commercial vehicles sold that month. The Toyota Hilux once again topped the charts, not only in its segment but also in the overall Argentine market, with 2,812 units sold, capturing 6.8% of the light vehicle market. The Ford Ranger followed with 1,768 registrations, and the Volkswagen Amarok with 1,178 units. These three models alone accounted for approximately 85% of the sales volume among these six popular pickups.

While the broader market for light vehicles saw a decline of over 30% compared to July 2025, this group of pickups experienced a smaller drop of around 16%, indicating a relative gain in market share. The segment is also becoming increasingly diverse and competitive. New entrants like the BYD Shark, Kia Tasman, Fiat Titano, and Ram Dakota have recently joined historically established models, expanding the choices available for consumers seeking vehicles for work, recreational use, or higher-spec versions.

As of August 2026, prices for these pickups vary significantly. The most accessible Toyota Hilux 4x2 starts at ARS $49,325,000, while the Ford Ranger 4x2 begins at ARS $48,414,560. The Volkswagen Amarok 4x2 is priced from ARS $51,929,800. Other models include the Nissan Frontier starting at ARS $44,417,232, the Chevrolet S10 from ARS $49,325,900, and the Renault Alaskan from ARS $58,220,000. The Fiat Titano is available from ARS $52,270,000, and the RAM Dakota Warlock starts at a higher ARS $75,380,000. Newer additions include the electric BYD Shark, priced at US$59,990, and the JAC T9 at US$38,500.
