Pig Escapes Truck, Causes Traffic Chaos on Taiwan Highway

A bizarre scene unfolded on Taiwan's National Highway No. 1 in Changhua on August 26, 2026, when a pig escaped from a transport vehicle and began running loose on the roadway. The incident occurred just before the traditional Ghost Festival (Zhongyuan Pudu), leading some onlookers to jokingly suggest the pig was attempting a dramatic escape from its fate.

The runaway pig weaved through traffic, causing drivers to slow down and avoid the animal, which resulted in a traffic backup of approximately 2 kilometers. Dashcam footage captured the tense moments as the pig darted between cars and trucks, creating a hazardous situation for motorists.

Highway police and road maintenance crews responded to the scene. While one worker attempted to warn oncoming traffic with a red flag, others tried to corral the pig with nets. However, the agile animal evaded capture multiple times, leading to a prolonged chase on the highway.

Authorities confirmed they received the report around 3:45 PM and managed to clear the situation by 4:10 PM, thankfully without any accidents. The truck responsible for transporting the pig has been identified, and the driver will face penalties according to traffic regulations for failing to secure the cargo properly. The law stipulates fines ranging from NT$3,000 to NT$18,000 for such violations.
