Pims Hospital Refers Serious Gynecology Cases After Newborn Deaths

Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) is implementing temporary measures to refer serious gynecology cases to Polyclinic and other hospitals in Rawalpindi following the tragic fire that claimed the lives of 14 newborn babies. The incident has necessitated significant adjustments to the hospital's operations.

As many as seven gynecology patients and one child have already been transferred from Pims to Holy Family Hospital (HFH). An official at HFH stated that the hospital maintains a "no-refusal policy" and is prepared to accommodate patients. However, Pims is making these referrals due to the destruction of its nursery, which requires time for renovation and repair.

A senior gynecologist, speaking anonymously, explained that even on Thursday, Pims handled three to four deliveries that could be considered serious. The hospital recognizes the strain that referring all such cases might place on other facilities if Pims were to cease operations entirely. Therefore, a selective referral process is in place for the most critical cases.

The temporary arrangement aims to ensure that patients requiring specialized care continue to receive it without undue delay, while Pims focuses on recovery and repairs after the devastating loss of its neonatal unit.
