Pingtung County Sees Rise in Teacher Retirements, Boosts Recruitment

Pingtung County in Taiwan is facing a significant increase in teacher retirements, particularly among elementary and kindergarten educators, a trend that has been ongoing for at least three consecutive years. In 2026, 61 junior high school teachers and 181 elementary and kindergarten teachers retired, marking a substantial rise.

This surge in retirements has prompted a record number of teacher recruitments. The county's education department has opened over 100 positions for elementary and preschool teachers for the third year in a row. Additionally, the recruitment for junior high school teachers was expanded from an initial 64 to 92 positions, including 28 additional placements.

The education department attributes the growing retirement numbers to a combination of factors. These include individual career development paths, the challenges of student discipline and parent-teacher communication, and upcoming regulatory changes. Notably, starting in 2027, the age requirement for receiving full monthly retirement pay for public school staff will increase from 50 to 55, and the eligibility threshold will be raised from 50 to 85. These changes are expected to cause a slight decrease in retirements in the following years.

To address the pressures faced by teachers, including student discipline and communication issues, the Pingtung County government has implemented several support measures. These include streamlining administrative tasks, encouraging professional learning communities, providing professional development opportunities, subsidizing teaching equipment, and offering counseling services. Special incentives such as improved dormitory facilities for teachers in remote areas, transportation subsidies for the Hengchun Peninsula, and long-term service bonuses are also in place to encourage teacher retention. The education department emphasizes its commitment to supporting teachers and fostering a positive and respectful teaching environment.
