Plateau adopts Dariye report, prepares fresh peace dialogue

Plateau State in Nigeria is taking a significant step towards addressing its enduring security issues with the formal adoption of a comprehensive report aimed at fostering reconciliation. The State Peace Committee has officially embraced the findings and recommendations from a subcommittee led by former Governor Joshua Dariye, designating it as the guiding document for future peace-building efforts.

Joyce Ramnap, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, announced that the committee unanimously approved the report during a meeting chaired by Governor Caleb Mutfwang. She described the document as a crucial "working document that will guide the implementation of practical measures towards lasting peace, unity, and development in the state." This adoption signifies a commitment to moving beyond rhetoric and towards concrete actions.

In addition to adopting the report, the committee has initiated preparations for "Plateau Resolve 2.0," a wide-ranging dialogue initiative. This platform is intended to bring together diverse communities from across the state to enhance reconciliation, strengthen social cohesion, and foster mutual understanding. Furthermore, the government has been directed to examine security and policing strategies from previous administrations, identifying any effective measures that can be integrated into the current framework.

The adoption of the Dariye report follows a series of high-level engagements, including a meeting between a Plateau delegation and President Bola Tinubu in April 2026. The delegation discussed the state's deteriorating security situation, prompting the President to urge intensified peace efforts. Governor Mutfwang subsequently inaugurated the strategic committee to consolidate discussions and propose actionable solutions. The committee is expected to present further recommendations on specific issues, including the complex indigene-settler question, which carries significant constitutional weight and is vital for achieving sustainable peace.
