Plateau buses make face masks compulsory to curb diphtheria spread

Passengers on TinCity Metro buses in Plateau State will need face masks from Tuesday as authorities step up efforts to contain a diphtheria outbreak.

The directive from Plateau Express Services Group applies to all TinCity Metro buses, the intra-city mass transit service operating within the Jos metropolis. Management announced the policy in a statement issued on Monday, saying the “No Face Mask, No Entry” rule would take effect on September 8, 2026, and remain in place until further notice.

The operator said it would provide a limited number of masks at designated boarding points to ease the start of enforcement. It also advised commuters to bring their own, warning that supplies might not cover everyone. Management urged passengers to comply and cooperate with bus personnel, saying public health outbreaks require collective responsibility.

The Management of Plateau Express Services Group has directed the enforcement of a “No Face Mask, No Entry” policy on all TinCity Metro buses, effective Tuesday, 8th September 2026, until further notice.

The requirement comes as the Plateau State Government intensifies measures against diphtheria, a bacterial infection that can spread through respiratory droplets and close contact. Health Commissioner Nicholas Baamlong said the state had recorded 148 suspected cases and 23 deaths in the preceding two weeks. Eight patients were receiving treatment at Jos University Teaching Hospital and five others at Plateau Specialist Hospital.
