Plateau Potato: Governor Mutfwang Cultivates Prosperity in Nigeria's Highlands

Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang is spearheading a significant agricultural transformation, aiming to elevate the humble potato into a branded, profitable commodity known as "Plateau Potato." This strategic rebranding moves beyond traditional subsistence farming to establish a robust agricultural value chain that benefits farmers and stimulates downstream industries.

The initiative is underpinned by substantial government support. Recently, Mutfwang launched the distribution of 500 truckloads of subsidized fertilizer for the 2026 farming season. This intervention, a joint effort with the 17 Local Government Councils, significantly lowers production costs for potato farmers, who will purchase fertilizer at ₦20,000 per bag, well below market rates. The Commissioner for Agriculture, Samson Bugama, noted this year's distribution is more than double previous efforts, supported by a transparent, technology-driven tracking system.

Beyond input subsidies, the administration is providing improved, disease-resistant potato seedlings designed for higher yields. This focus on quality inputs is crucial for building a successful value chain. However, the most transformative step is the government's commitment to directly purchase harvested produce from farmers. This policy aims to shield smallholders from exploitation by middlemen, guarantee a market for their crops, and ensure fair, predictable returns on their investment.

This direct procurement model is designed to move farmers from a vulnerable position, often forced to sell at low prices immediately after harvest, to one of greater financial security and planning capability. It strengthens the marketing and distribution segments of the value chain and cushions farmers against potential price declines. The governor's vision extends to year-round production, community resilience, and fostering agro-processing, making agriculture a central pillar of Plateau State's economy.
