Plateau varsity lecturers declare indefinite strike over unmet demands

Lecturers at Plateau State University in Bokkos have initiated an indefinite strike, citing the administration's failure to meet their demands. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter announced the industrial action Wednesday, following a 14-day ultimatum that expired without satisfactory resolution.

The union's six-point charter of demands includes the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme and the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement. They also seek payment of arrears from January 1, 2026, and the provision of secure staff quarters. Additionally, ASUU is calling for the construction of trenches around the university's perimeter fence and an end to the alleged intimidation of union leaders.

In a statement signed by Chairperson Vincent D. Choji and Secretary Lomka Kopdiya, ASUU-PLASU expressed conviction that their demands had not been adequately addressed. The union confirmed that the National Executive Council had approved the strike, and all members were instructed to halt academic activities until further notice.
